Axiom's extensive knowledge of sortation systems and software was the key to a UK conveyor manufacturer to approach us for an existing installation upgrade. The system had been supplied some years ago and was not as efficient as it could be.

The upgrade was to include the introduction of automatic omni-directional scanning, eliminating the need for manual hand entry of products entering the sortation system and therefore improving system efficiency.

The barcode readers were installed and commissioned. However, it was discovered by the conveyor manufacturer that the conveyor control system could not support the additional barcode reading hardware and communication using the then current Siemens S5 PLC. Axiom was asked to solve the problem.

Axiom's solution was to add a new Siemens S7-300 PLC, communication card and I/O into available space in the control cabinet. The new PLC I/O was then connected to the old PLC, allowing the old system to be unplugged and the new system connected. This enabled the system to be commissioned without any down time to the client whatsoever.

As a by-product the client had complete cover in the event that a problem ever occurred with the S7 PLC (event though this meant manually entering system information).

Axiom developed a graphical user interface and configuration tool for setting up sortation plans and configuring operating modes.

The complete software and hardware solution from order placement to final handover took a little over five weeks.
